Donald Trump’s latest warning to introduce an further complete levy on Chinese goods has been described as a “classic case” of United States’ contradictory behavior, per the Chinese government.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson additionally remarked that China could enact its own undisclosed “responsive actions” if the White House occupant executes his warning, emphasizing that the country was “unafraid” of a looming commercial battle.

This past Friday, Trump responded at the Chinese government’s action to tighten its regulations for overseas sales of rare earth minerals, accusing China of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the world “under its control”.

Additionally, he warned to withdraw from a planned summit with China’s President President Xi, which was expected to take place during a summit in the Republic of Korea in the coming weeks.

His statements on Friday rattled global markets, with the benchmark US stock index dropping over two and a half percent, marking its biggest drop since earlier this year.

His comments renewed fears of a trade war between the two economic giants.

Earlier this year, the two sides had reached an agreement to eliminate triple-digit tariffs on each other’s products, which had led to concerns of commerce ceasing between the economic powers.

This left, American import duties on Chinese imports incurring an additional thirty percent tariff compared with the beginning of 2025, while US goods entering the country incur a 10% tariff.

Beijing’s recent statements – issued by the Commerce Ministry in the format of official answers to media inquiries – echoed terminology from the peak of the recent trade conflict.

They criticised US export restrictions on electronic components while justifying Beijing’s overseas sale regulations on key elements as “routine measures” to ensure domestic safety and that of the global community.

The spokesperson said that for “many years”, the United States had “broadened the definition” of national security, exploited export control measures and “implemented” biased policies against Beijing.

“Using” import duty warnings is not the proper method to deal with China,” the spokesperson stated.

“China’s position on a tariff war has consistently been unchanging: we wish to avoid one, but we are unafraid of one.”

Recently, China announced it was strengthening export controls on key elements and further resources vital for advanced tech manufacturing.

This was seen as a important measure, as the nation handles about ninety percent of the world’s rare earths, which are employed in products such as photovoltaic modules and smartphones.

New remarks from Washington and Beijing are being seen by observers as a strategy of strengthening positions ahead of forthcoming discussions.

Is not yet known whether a meeting between Donald Trump and China’s leader, scheduled at a summit in the Republic of Korea before month’s end, will still proceed.
